Game Wrap 4/13/2018: Padres 5 Giants 1

The Giants offense went back into sputter mode, Ty Blach faltered after 4 no-hit innings and the Giants lost quietly.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .313.
Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 3, BB.   BA= .270.
Brandon Crawford SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .273.
Gregor Blanco CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .391.

These 4 players all had multi-hit games.  Unfortunately, they were all singles and McCutchen(.204), Posey(.341), Longoria(.149) and Pence(.200) all went 0 for 4 and failed in multiple RBI opportunities.  McCutchen in particular left 7 runners on base although in 1 AB he hit the ball hard but right at the SS.

Ty Blach LHP- 5 IP,  7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.43.  Blach sailed through 4 innings allowing just 1 BB.   He started to falter in the 5'th but should have been out of it with just 1 run allowed but for an error by Brandon Belt which allowed Carlos Asauaje reach base on a replay call.  For some reason, Bochy thought it was a good idea to send him back out in the 6'th to face the Padres order for the 3'rd time with predictable results:  2B, 2B, 1B.  Boom!  The score was 4-0 and you kind of knew the game was over at that point.

Pierce Johnson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.13.  Johnson continues to impress in the chances he gets.

Sam Dyson RHP- 2 IP,  1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.   ERA= 7.11.  Franchy Cordero greeted Dyson with a bomb.  He then settled down to retire the last 6 Padres batters in the game.  Still would not trust him in any situation where the outcome of the game is in doubt.

The Loss dropped the Giants into 3'rd place in the NL West,  4 games behind the D'Backs who outscored the Dodgers 8-7.  The Rockies topped the the Nationals 2-1 to remain 3 games off the lead in 2'nd place. The 4'th place Dodgers are 5.5 games behind while the Padres still bring up the rear at 6 games off the pace.

Derek Holland tries to get the Giants back to .500 facing Clayton Richard who always seems to be tough on the Giants.

  1. i have a feeling that blach is better as a swingman and if suarez continues to tear it up, blach could be the one going to the pen.

  2. After Will Smith and Samardjiza are back - the rotation ought to be Cueto, Stratton, Samardjiza, Beede, Suarez - release Dyson and Holland, Blach goes to longman in the pen: Moronta, Johnson, Gearrin, Smith, Watson and Strickland.
