Down on the Farm: Your 2018 Richmond Flying Squirrels

Here is the 2018 Richmond Flying Squirrels Opening Day roster as it currently stands:

Pitchers:  Shaun Anderson RHP, Ray Black RHP, Mike Connolly RHP, Tyler Cyr RHP, Matt Gage LHP, Ryan Halstead RHP, Jordan Johnson RHP, Dusten Knight RHP, Jake McCasland RHP, Caleb Simpson RHP, Dan Slania RHP, Cory Taylor RHP, Garrett Williams LHP.

Catchers:  Ronnie Freeman, Aramis Garcia.

Infielders:  Jonah Arenado 3B, Ali Castillo 2B, Dillon Dobson 1B, Ryan Howard SS, Jerry Sands 1B.

Outfielders:  Daniel Carbonell, Dylan Davis, Ronnie Jebavy, Matt Lipka, Luigi Rodriguez.

I count 8 potential SP's:  Anderson, Connolly, Gage, Jordan Johnson, McCasland, Slania, Taylor and Williams.  Heck, even Dusten Knight got stretched out at the end of last season! Somebody is going to the bullpen, most likely Slania and Johnson.

Ray Black is going to try to stay healthy and get his triple digit FB over the plate for another season.

Garcia and Howard are likely to lead an offensively challenged team.

Jonah Arenado can make a big jump in prospect rankings with a strong showing.

Wow!  That OF is depressing!

Overall this is a weak group with Shaun Anderson, Garrett Williams, Garcia, Howard and Arenado being the only serious prospects.

  1. Yeah, it's not an outfield to really give one confidence when it comes to run production. Jebavy & Carbonell have the physical talent, but neither has translated that into hitting. Though Carbonell was, early-on, showing he could make good contact before the wheels fell off his BA in AA so, perhaps, for Carbonell, it was just a blip and he'll get back on track even though the clock is ticking due to his being 27.

  2. Looks like the Dylan Davis 3rd baseman experiment is dead.
