Fantasy Focus: Impact Rookies- Eloy Jimenez

Eloy Jimenez, OF, B-R, T-R, 6'4", 205 lbs.

Eloy Jimenez is a young power hitting prospect who moved from the Cubs organization to the White Sox in the Jose Quintana trade.  His bat, which had always been highly touted, but possibly a bit underperforming in the Cubs organization, exploded upon arrival in ChiSoxland and has not stopped in winter ball.

2014 R:  .229/.268/.367, 3 HR, 167 PA.
2015 SS:  .284/.328/.418, 7 HR, 250 PA.
2016 A:  .329/.369/.532, 14 HR, 464 PA.
2017 A+(Cubs):  .271/.351/.490, 8 HR, 10.3 BB%, 20.1 K%, 174 PA.
2017 A+(White Sox): .345/.410/.682, 8 HR, 9.8 BB%, 17.2 K%, 122 PA.
2017 AA(White Sox):  .353/.397/.559, 3 HR, 6.8 BB%, 21.9 K%, 73 PA.

Eloy has continued to rake in the Dominican Winter League with a .373 BA and 4 HR in 65 PA.

He's a big body who probably weighs in at least 30 lbs heavier than his listed 205 lbs.  He has average speed and a below average arm which leaves LF as his only defensive option other than 1B.  The other rap on him is a series of nagging injuries including several hammys.  He's sidelined again in winter league right now.  Since most fantasy formats don't count defense, he's likely to be an asset as long as he can stay healthy.  I would think he starts 2018 in AAA with a midseason callup if he continues to rake.  If you have a roster spot or 2 for prospects, he's defnitely worth drafting.  If not, follow him closely and pick him up as soon as you start hearing rumors about a callup.

  1. Doc: Will you be writing about who (if anyone) the Giants might seek in the Free Agent market?
Saw a couple links to Todd Frazier for SF -- would they even consider that? Wouldn't that be closing the door for Arroyo?
Also have seen speculation about Cain and Martinez in the OF, wouldn't they be too expensive? Isn't Martinez a negative defensively?
How much do you think the Giants would spend? How much will they have available if they are to stay below the Competitive Balance Limit?

    1. I wrote up some Scouting the Offseason posts where I talked about how much money the Giants might have available and who they might go after. Unless they can find a way to offload some salary, they are only about $10-$12 M under the "Luxury Tax" threshold. Hard to see how they sign even one significant FA for that let alone 2 or 3. Even is they trade for players, they still have to take on those salaries and count them against the threshold.

Giants find themselves in a payroll pickle and I'm not sure even they know how they are going to get out of it.

    2. When you make lists of potentially available players and get down to the affordable ones, you really start to wonder if Just Play the Kids might be not only the cheapest option, but the best. Duggar in CF, Arroyo at 3B, platoon Span and Pence in LF with Jarrett Parker and/or Austin Slater in RF.

    3. Is that almost conceding?
      Here's an interesting factoid:
In the last 10 years, there have been 8 different WS winners.
7 of the 8 have won once each, one has won 3 times!
Of the seven with just one win, none, not one, nadie has come from Los Angeles, no matter how much they have spent down there!
      Dominance?
