Spring Training Game Wrap 3/11/2017: D'Backs 5 Giants 1

Giants bats had a tough time against the D'Backs in Talking Stick, AZ.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .136.  Hernandez is off to slow spring start offensively, like many other Giants hitters.  He drove in the only  Giants run in this one with a hard hit double down the LF line.

Mac Williamson LF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .308.  Interesting battle between Parker and Mac.  They are both rising to the occasion.

Ty Blach LHP- 2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.89.  Not a great outing, but the peripherals look good.  With Matt Cain looking more and more like he might be done, does #5 SP come down to Blach vs Beede?  Wouldn't Beede likely benefit from at least a half season in AAA?

Clayton Blackburn RHP- 2.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.23.  I think you'd have to put Blackburn behind Blach and Beede on the depth chart right now.

Kyle Crick RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Cricky has been pitching some clean innings this spring.  Has he figured something out?

Joan Gregorio RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.38.  This is a big season for Gregorio's future.  He needs to kick it up a notch in AAA and bring his results in line with his peripheral numbers.

Around the League:

A big scare for the KC Royals as Salvador Perez hurt his knee in a home plate collision with Sal Butera in the Venezuela/Italy WBC game.  Perez was  carried off the field but later reportedly informed the Royals that the injury was "not serious."  Let's hope that is correct.

LHP TJ House of Toronto Blue Jays became the latest pitcher to be struck in the head by a comebacker.  He reportedly did not suffer any fractures and seems like he will be OK.  Once again, unless MLB does something about this, it is a question of when, not if, a pitcher will die from one of these injuries.

  1. 3 weeks from today, after 19 more pre-season games, Giants will be back in AZ for the start of regular games.
    Because of an off-day on Monday April 3, a 5th starter isn't needed until Game #9, April 11 @ AT&T against AZ.
With 10+ innings in, certainly Rags and cohorts surely know what's with Matt: 16 hits (1 HR), 3 walks, a HB, and only 5 Ks -- he's not missing many bats.
The question is the same: can they harness the horse?
He gets 21 mill this year plus 7.5 next year no matter what his status. Is he better than someone promoted at the ML minimum?
Perhaps they can leave him in AZ to work out as they did with Zito near the end (on the DL). While there's no $$ advantage, it does free up a roster spot which could go to one of the positional aspirants rather than a pitcher, at least for the first 9 days.
The end is sad, but not the worst thing ever. Giants have made the playoffs twice and one WS win without Cain being Cain, there are choices. Funny that 3 of the contenders (Cain, Blach, and Blackburn) all had not-so-great days yesterday!
There's time for Beede to start opening day in Sacramento April 6 and then game 9 for SF!

  2. Is anyone worried about Span?
    Slash line .053/.182/.053/.234
He's never had a Spring this bad except 0-2 in 2015 but had a good year.

    1. Can't judge a veteran player like Span on an early spring training slash line.

    2. I do think we might be able to get an upgrade in CF (replace Span or get a better platoon player than Gorkys). Dr. B wondering if there's a player that the Giants can trade for using Nunez and a Stratton type of player?

    3. I don't really see that happening. I'm thinking more in terms of a #5 SP if Cain continues to get shelled and Blach/Blackburn/Beede don't seem ready.

I'll have to go through some depth charts and see what teams might have a surplus of CF types and who might want a utility IF. One problem with trading Nunez is there are not really any teams out there in desperate need of a 3B, but I suppose a team might be interested in him as a 1 year option at SS?

    4. even if our #5 struggles i would rather we look to booster CF, LF and the bullpen. I believe in our top 4 guys in the rotation, a low 5 era from our #5 should more than get us the playoffs. Plus a #5 probably won't be used in a playoffs series.

    5. Span has what, 2 years and $20 M on his contract. The Giants are not going to dump that until he proves he can't at least be the left-handed half of a platoon. What about Parker/Williamson makes you think neither of them is up to LF?
