Game Wrap 7/8/2016: Giants 6 D'Backs 2

Jeff Samardzija survived a shaky first inning to give the Giants a QS and Brandon Crawford continued to make the league pay for his All-Star Game snub.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt- 0 for 1, 4 BB's.  BA= .299.  OK, if you walk 4 times per game hitting ahead of Buster Posey, some good things are bound to happen sooner or later.  Belt scored just 1 run in this game.

Buster Posey- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .289.  Samardzija hit Jean Segura with a pitch in the top of the 2'nd inning.  Patrick Corbin threw inside twice at Buster who got out of the way.  The second duster drew a warning to both benches from the umpire.  Bochy came out and got tossed for the first time this season and 69'th of his career.  How many did Bobby Cox have?  Wasn't it over 200?

Brandon Crawford- 3 for 3, 2B, HR(9), BB.  BA= .278. Crawford is the Giants hottest hitter right now, 5 for 10 over his last 3 games.  His slash line for the last 7 games is .304/.393/.609 and .358/.410/.604 over his last 15.

Gregor Blanco- 1 for 1, HR(1).  BA= .251.  Blanco added to the Giants 4-2 lead with a PH HR.  Best 4'th OF in baseball!

Jeff Samardzija- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.91.  Samardzija came close to a QS last start, 4 ER in 7.1 IP, and got one this game. Kept his WHIP down and the ball on the ground. with some K's.  We'll take that.

Derek Law- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.90.  Law has been one of the more reliable pitchers out of the bullpen.

Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.93.  Romo gave up a leadoff single to Goldy, but then struck out the side in vintage Romo fashion, including righty killer, Jake Lamb and another lefty hitter, Chris Herrmann.  Maybe Romo is the equivalent of a deadline trade?  Having him shut down the 8'th inning is huge!  Now, if he can just stay healthy!

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 3.03.  Strickland pitched the 9'th inning in a non-Save game.  He gave up a leadoff single then 3 rockets to CF, but hey, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

The Win kept the Giants 6.5 games ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West as the Bad Guys outscored the Padres 10-6.

Jake Peavy tries to keep the good times rolling against lefty Robbie Ray in an afternoon tilt in AT&T Park.

  1. Romo was the missing link in the bullpen. With 5 guys in the top 100 prospect's list we gotta add something. Or maybe Pence will be that addition bat instead of Beltran again.

  2. Romo as the deadline trade is a cool thought. He's the best addition you could hope for given the current market. The next "deadliners": Pence and Panik.

  3. And Duffy.
    And KT.
Question: Castillo, Pena, Hernandez, & Moreno (and to some extent Green and Gillaspie) have lackluster or inconsistent history in the minors then have put together good seasons at Sacramento. Is it maturity or better coaching or BABIP luck?
BTW, Susac has put together an excellent 10 game stretch. Finally.

    1. The Giants do a great job of putting people in situations where they can succeed, and have been doing it for many years now.

  4. The Diamondbacks are a tire fire. You can't throw at Posey twice. Love Craw's response. And Belt and Crawford are best in baseball with the glove, who cares about all-stars or dWAR scores.

But back to the D-backs. How bad are their all-in moves looking now? As Dansby Swanson gets ready... Just horrible moves by LaRussa and Stewart.

    1. Glad you included La Russa, Shankbone. Dave Stewart gets all the guffaws over at Fangraphs, but where's the outrage over LaRussa? I mean, he either had to have signed off on the offseason moves or else he was asleep at the wheel. No other options available on THAT multiple choice question!

I actually think Stewart/LaRussa had the right idea that the fastest way to get competitive was to upgrade the pitching. They just went about it all wrong. Now I don't think Shark was ever going to Phoenix, but it seems like they definitely could have had Cueto. They also could have modestly overpaid for Mike Leake. The combo of Cueto and Leake while keeping Swanson in the organization would be smelling like a rose right now instead of the durian fruit they're stuck with.
