AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels quieted the Trenton Thunder 6-4:

Hunter Cole RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .263.
Ryder Jones DH- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .233.

Tyler Mizenko RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.82.

Don't go to sleep on Ryder Jones as a prospect.  He's showing some pretty serious power in an environment that suppresses power.

High A  San Jose Giants edged out the Stockton Ports 5-4:

Low A Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Columbia Fireflies 3-0:

Lucius Fox SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .223.

Carlos Alvarado RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(5).  ERA= 0.00.

Caleb Smith has a 0.00 ERA in his last 12 IP over 10 appearances with 20 K's against 5 BB's.  On the season he has 49 K's against 15 BB's in 29 IP.  Maybe could cut down the BB's a bit, but the K's are tremendous!

Futures Game  World trounced the USA 11-3:

Adalberto Mejia and Phil Bickford representing the Giants pitched a scoreless inning each in the game.

  1. ESPN was suggesting, the other day, that Bickford might be trade-bait to get an impact reliever. Since I won't pay for their 'Insider' stories (did it once, what a mistake) I don't know the entire context. However, I, for one, hope not as I am a 'pitching-first' kind of guy and I'd really hate it if the Giants gave up Bickford (or Beede).

  2. I'd be surprised if Bickford traded. Or Beede. (Beede because teams aren't knocking on the door for him right now.)

Arroyo is the guy I think the G's would make available. But, because the Post Shelby-Miller valuation right now is so crazy, I'm not sure what Arroyo would bring.

  3. What about Bickford and ??? for Andrew Miller?
Yankees are still in the WC (tenuously) and they need more than an elite closer as a set-up man. They are weak at C, 1B, 3B, DH, one OF, and SP.
Parker might play well in AL and if we ever get healthy we have surplus IFers plus Susac is looking better.
Miller is signed through '18 (the next even year) at $9M per.
There are several other SPs that might interest NY

    1. The Yankees have assured Andrew Miller he is not going to get traded. Also, they are 5.5 games out of the Wild Card race which is by no means a selling position for them. If they drop farther back by the end of the month, maybe, but right now I'm betting against them trading any part of their 3-headed bullpen monster, least of all Miller.

    2. According to mlbtraderumors, Miller has been told that the Yankees will "trade him by the Aug. 1 deadline if an offer comes along that’s too enticing to pass on".

    3. Too enticing to pass up? Well that is pretty much true for every player out there, right? Everything is for sale for the right price. I don't expect Miller to be traded and if he is, I don't expect it to be to the Giants because another team will have a better trade package.

  4. I think it also unlikely the Giants would trade Beede since we are going to need quality pitching in the next few years. First, Beede's season hasn't been bad, so I still think he's a top prospect and he's been rated pretty high among those we have rated. Having said that, we have Peavy in a walk year this year, Cain can be bought out of his contract for a relatively modest $7.5mm the year following and Cueto could very well walk next year. Even if we keep Cain, which we might, we have 3 pitchers in 3 years (and could be as early as next year).

To fill those spots, we have Beede, Brickford and Meija (I'm going with the three best). That is great to have targets but not great in the sense if something happens, who else do you have? We have Gregorio (I'm not sure whether he's advanced enough), Gagne (seems pretty good but still a little rough), Marshall, Suarez (the one in the minors) and maybe a couple of other candidates. Decent depth, and potential, but no one screaming "Hey look at me".

To trade one of you top two to rent a reliever makes no sense. And given we're not going to be in the running for a top reliever, I still wonder if what we have in the way of Stratton, Okert, Black, etc. isn't enough if not "as good".

We've got the best record in baseball, admittedly beating up on horrible teams. But that is what good teams do. We get Cain back at the break, Panik the following week, and hopefully Pence and Duffy by month end. With us also getting back a very rested Romo, who cements the pen order, I think the Giants stand down.

    1. I think this may be the rare year where the Giants don't go for a big deadline trade for the reasons you mentioned above. With Cain coming back, they don't need another starter. Their internal replacements have been more than good and with Panik and Pence coming back soon, they really don't have any glaring position needs. Even the bullpen would take a close to elite reliever to upgrade now that Romo is back and Suarez can go back to long relief.

So, yeah, I'm on the camp that says the Giants should go with what they have and not sell off any part of the farm, even though the farm is deep enough that they could if they had to. It's just that they don't have to.

  5. Why would the giants, give up a top minor league player, for a reliever. People, we are probably looking at a Javier type of trade.

    1. Maybe because in order to get an upgrade on what they currently have in the bullpen, it's going to cost a top minor leaguer?
