Down on the Farm: 4/10/2015

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 2-0:

Braulio Lara(LHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Andrew Heaney(LHP, Bees)- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

The Cats managed just 3 hits in the game.  Andrew Heaney is a highly touted pitching prospect who was traded from Miami to the Dodgers this offseason in the Dee Gordon trade.  He was then flipped to the Angels for Howie Kendrick.  Looks like he may be ready to help the Angels sooner than later.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Bowie Baysox 1-0:

Javier Herrera(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .444.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 0.00.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

Did Herrera really play CF?  I really like to see those 5 K's in 2 IP, from Johnson.  Baby steps for Josh Osich.

High A  San Jose Giants blanked the Lancaster Jethawks 5-0:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .444.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .500.
Ty Ross(Catcher)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .167.
Chase Johnson(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Arroyo and Ryder Jones continue to be the hitting stars for the Little Giants.  Very impressive team pitching in Lancaster, a notoriously difficult place to pitch.  Baby steps for Agosta and Vander Tuig.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets outslugged the Greenville Drive 9-6:

Johneshwy Fargas(CF)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .300.
Jeremy Sy(SS)- 2 for 5, 3B, HR(1), BB.  BA= .444.
John Riley(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .375.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 3 for 5, 2 HR(2).  BA= .500.
Michael Santos(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

The big news here is Arenado's 2 dingers.  I am doing a little dance of joy as I write this.  Do you know how huge a breakout season for him would be?  I also think Fargas is a high ceiling prospect who very well could break out this year.  Riley is a sleeper too.

  1. Does anyone know if Santos went out with an injury? Watching the live stats showed a coaches visit to the mound with an injury time out, and then Santos was replaced after only 3 innings.

    1. Roger, who has taken over Minor Lines over at MCC, said Santos walked off with the trainer so it is most likely some type of injury. No word on what yet.

  2. He very well could have. Only threw 45 pitches in 2.2 IP, so that would certainly explain the early exit.

My eyes just about popped out of my head when I checked the Augusta box score last night. We've been waiting for Arenado to show something with the bat. Pretty amazing that he didn't hit a single HR in rookie ball (2 seasons), but manages to knock out 2 in one game in the pitcher-friendly SALLY. Wow.

DrB, Javier Herrera has started in CF in both of Richmond's games so far, with Carbonell playing in left. I really have no explanation for that one, other than maybe the staff isn't confident in Carbonell's defense.

    1. I just figured Herrera was so beaten up over the years with all the injuries, maybe he no longer has the physical tools to play CF, but maybe not.

I love Arenado's size, love his pedigree, love what I've read about his work ethic. I've believed he was a sleeper ever since he was drafted. One game does not a career make, but that is a mighty impressive boxscore line!

    2. Cove, remember that they were playing in one of the more hitter-friendly parks in that game. It is still a wonderful accomplishment, but that is the specific context.

    3. True, but when was the last time an Augusta batter went 3 for 5 with 2 dingers in ANY context?

  3. Jonah Arenado went to my high school so I am going to be rooting for him.

Before last season started I thought Javier Herrera would be the first OF bat to be called up. Although he is an older prospect he had a great 2013 hitting 16 HR, 37 2B with a .296 AVG. However, he only played a few games in April and finished the year on the DL. I never heard what was wrong with him so I am assuming it was something bad like TJ or ACL surgery. He has come back pretty strong so far. I don't expect him to have a great MLB career but he may be able to help us off the bench if we have any more injuries.

  4. Giants get to keep Ehire Adrianza. He cleared waivers and was outrighted to Sacramento, so we should be seeing his name in boxscores soon.

    1. Great news. He's most valuable getting at bats as Crawford insurance. He's missed so much time I don't know if he's had a full season. He'll be back.
